Lakewood School Students Help Iraqi School

In early November students and staff at the New Road School of Ocean County, Lakewood, eagerly collected and donated school supplies to assist in the furnishing of a new school in Qubuq, northern Iraq. The school was destroyed by a car bomb on August 6, 2007. Thanks to people here in the United States, including our students, a new school has been erected.

Paper, pencils, pens, dividers, erasers, backpacks, books and other supplies were collected. Early in December, students from Mrs. Marande's and Mrs. Hess' classes gathered to wrap and pack the materials to be sent overseas. The collection and packing were done as a community service project for the students. The children were very excited to be able to send school supplies to other children who have nothing. It is often difficult for our students to understand that all schools in the world are not like ours - heated, air conditioned and well-stocked with books, paper and pencils. Hopefully, this community project afforded some insight into the lives of children in less fortunate
countries and helped to bring alive the conflict going on half way around the world.
