New Road School of Ocean County Hosts Visiting Professor

On January 24, 2008, the high school classes of New Road School of Ocean County in Lakewood were treated to an afternoon with a visiting professor from Ryder University. Mrs. Gail Smith, Professor of Biology, spent the afternoon lecturing our students about the digestive system, the circulatory system, the abdominal cavity and DNA.

The students got to observe the dissection of a fetal pig with step-by-step instructions and identification of all body parts. Some of our students were at first reluctant to observe this process but still participated in the program. Many of our students were truly inspired and enjoyed the program immensely. They continued asking questions and observing right up until the buses were called.

Another station was set up where each student was given the opportunity to extract DNA from a kernel of wheat. This was an interesting venture for our students. They were truly surprised to learn that our DNA differs less than 1% from that of a Chimpanzee’s!

Programs like this stimulate student’s thinking and perhaps will encourage some to pursue a career in Biology or another life science related field of interest.
