New Road's Service Dogs makes successful transition
June 08, 2008
In June, 2008, two special graduates, Kate and Kruse, left the New Road School of Somerset. They came to us as puppies and spent two years being trained by our students. In June 2007 Kate and Kruse went back to the Assistance Dog Institute in California to complete their training as assistance dogs for individuals unable to be fully mobile and functioning without the help of a dog. Pictured below is Kruse undergoing training by assisting John, a wheelchair bound soldier wounded in Iraq.
Upon completion of his training, Kruse went on to his new partner, Karen, a woman with multiple sclerosis living in Yosemite, California. Kruse helps her keep her wheelchair moving when in the mall, and provides her with love and companionship. His partner Karen also wrote that Kruse “knows most of the commands. Thank you for training him.”
Little doubt that feedback like this makes us feel all of our time and effort were well spent.
Kate is still at the Assistance Dog Institute finishing up her training and then she too will be placed with a person needing an assistance dog.
