Rutgers Science Explorer
May 01, 2009
Students of the New Road School in Parlin had a very exciting scientific experience with the help of Rutgers University graduate students. The Rutgers Science Bus came to teach our students about volcanoes. Graduate students from Rutgers University fund their graduate research by presenting scientific experiments using the Rutgers Science Explorer Bus. The Bus is equipped to educate students in a classroom-like setting within the bus and perform experiments.
New Road School students from the elementary and middle school classes were taught how volcanoes form, what happens when pressure builds up, and how an atoll is created.
Students worked together to simulate the pressure build up in a volcano, created a cinder cone volcano using water pressure and sand, and created an atoll – which is a living reef created by an oceanic volcano.
